Exploring Ourselves Through AI with Professor Vukosi Marivate

Prof Marivate is a passionate advocate for African artificial intelligence initiatives.

As the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) gains a pervasive influence on many sectors of society from education to economics, Wits Alumni Relations invites you to an alumni talk titled “Exploring Ourselves Through AI” with Professor Vukosi Marivate (BSc Eng 2007, MSc Eng 2009).

Prof Marivate is an electrical engineering graduate from Wits who is currently a computer science professor at the University of Pretoria and holds the ABSA UP chair of data science. He has recently been appointed to the United Nations Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. In addition, he has been awarded the Order of Mapungubwe in Silver by the Presidency for his “excellent contributions.”

Prof Marivate is a passionate advocate for African AI initiatives and says the underlying technology has the capacity to capture diverse narratives. He will relate his journey into this specialised area of research, highlight some early encounters and share key takeaways of how his research can improve methods, tools and availability of data for local or low-resource languages.
