The Division of Radiation Oncology is a core component of the Department of Radiation Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. It operates within a multidisciplinary ecosystem alongside Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Medical Physics, enabling the delivery of comprehensive, precision-based oncologic care.

As one of only two public-sector radiation oncology centres in Gauteng, the Division plays a critical role in providing access to cancer treatment for a large and diverse patient population.

Clinical Services

The Division delivers a full spectrum of modern radiotherapy services, including:

  • External beam radiotherapy (IMRT, VMAT)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
  • Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT)
  • Brachytherapy (HDR and LDR programmes)
  • Specialised treatments including TBI and TSET

Services are delivered through four subspecialised clinical units, each led by a consultant with defined clinical and academic responsibilities.

Facilities and Clinical Platform

The Division operates across a multi-site platform:

  • Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) – Primary academic and clinical hub
  • Klerksdorp–Tshepong Hospital Complex – Regional training and service site

This model enhances capacity, expands access, and provides diverse training exposure.

Teaching and Training

The Division is deeply committed to education. Its postgraduate programme integrates:

  • Structured rotations across all tumour sites
  • Formal teaching sessions and tutorials
  • Continuous assessment aligned with CMSA requirements
  • Research through MMed dissertations

The Division also contributes to undergraduate education through elective rotations, introducing medical students to oncology and multidisciplinary care.

Research and Academic Output

The Division maintains a growing research portfolio with a strong focus on:

  • Clinical outcomes in resource-limited settings
  • Radiotherapy efficiency and innovation
  • Global oncology equity

Research is integrated into clinical practice, with registrars actively contributing to peer-reviewed publications.

Governance and Quality Assurance

Clinical governance is robust and aligned with international standards. All treatments undergo:

  • Multidisciplinary review
  • Peer-reviewed planning
  • Rigorous quality assurance processes

The Division maintains full accreditation for postgraduate training and continues to meet national and international benchmarks.
