Services

In addition to the general student services available at Wits, the School has developed the Learning Commons; a one-stop service hub for both staff and students.

The Learning Commons is a dynamic academic development space designed to support students and staff in developing the literacies and digital competencies required for success in contemporary higher education. As scholarship increasingly intersects with digital technologies and evolving forms of knowledge production, the Learning Commons provides an integrated environment where academic reading and writing, digital fluency, and collaborative learning come together.

Located within the Science and Technology Division at the University, the Learning Commons offers structured and accessible support for undergraduate and postgraduate students while also contributing to the professional development of academic staff. Its work is grounded in inclusive pedagogies that recognise linguistic diversity, promote academic integrity, and encourage responsible engagement with digital tools and artificial intelligence.

The Learning Commons operates through three interconnected studios. The ReadWrite Studio, the Digital Futures Studio, and the CoLab Studio.

Together, these studios create a vibrant and supportive ecosystem that strengthens academic practice, fosters digital innovation, and cultivates a collaborative scholarly community.

The WSoE Writing Centre

The Wits School of Education (WSoE) Writing Centre has become a specialised centre for student support in academic writing, in the field of Education. Senior students have been trained as mentors to work with undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop their academic writing confidence and proficiency. 江城足球网s have access to a variety of writing centre activities:

  • They can make appointments with a consultant at the centre. The WSoEWC is open every afternoon from 1pm -5pm during work days.
  • They can attend discipline based workshops which are pre-arranged between consultants and the course lecturers.
  • They can attend generic workshops on plagiarism and essay exam writing skills.
  • They can attend creative writing events which showcase students and lecturers’ creative writing in the School of Education.

Because of the smaller size of the WSoE campus, we have expanded on our individual and group consultations by running a number of workshops on academic writing for undergraduate and postgraduate students. These workshops have given students new strategies for tackling assignments and extended writing tasks, materials and models for effective writing, individualised attention regarding their own writing issues, and reading skills to enable accurate assignment engagement.

If you would like to make an appointment with a skilled writing consultant, please visit the centre which is open from 1pm-5pm from Monday to Friday. If you are a postgraduate student, you will be matched with a postgraduate writing consultant.
