The Wits FinTech Hub is a co-working space at the Liberty Group's Flame Station building in Braamfontein, where students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals come together to develop solutions to real-world problems in finance, data science, and AI.
FirstRand Foundation Chair
The Hub hosts a Professorial Chair in Financial Data Science, funded by the FirstRand Foundation and based in the School of Economics and Finance, to advance leading scholarship in the field.

Established in collaboration with Liberty Group Ltd, the Hub was founded on a shared vision: to create a space characterised by creative and intellectual diversity that fosters an entrepreneurial spirit and delivers tangible commercial and societal benefits.
What we do
Working with the School of Economics and Finance, the Hub trains students, entrepreneurs, and professionals in big data, fintech, and AI, including through a dedicated Master of Commerce degree in Financial Technology. We generate new knowledge through peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings, and connect early-stage startups with mentorship, resources, and funding through incubation and acceleration programmes.
Our research focuses on the challenges and opportunities that matter most to Africa: how technology such as machine learning and AI can solve real problems in finance, how fintech can drive financial inclusion for underserved communities, and how innovation can support SMEs crucial to job creation and economic growth across the continent.
